Shirley Lou McAvan

Mrs. Shirley L. McAvan, 95, of Delmar and DeWitt, Iowa, died peacefully Monday evening, July14, 2025, at Wheatland Manor, Wheatland, Iowa, just three days before her ninety-sixth birthday.  

Mrs. McAvan, the former Shirley Lou Truelsen was born July 18, 1929, in DeWitt to Henry and Clara (Walker) Truelsen.  Early in life she was employed at Iowa Mutual Insurance Company, DeWitt.  Shirley married Leo McAvan, August 22, 1948, in DeWitt.   She farmed alongside her husband at rural Delmar for many years which she greatly enjoyed. Shirley also worked at Pamida in Maquoketa from when it opened until it closed, a span of over 25 years.  Leo preceded Shirley in death October 30, 1999.  Shirley later resided in DeWitt until she was ready for the next chapter of her life and moved to Wheatland Manor.

Shirley loved crafting of all kinds, especially crafts at Wheatland Manor and thoroughly enjoyed time spent with its staff and residents.  She will always be remembered for her ready smile and acceptance of whatever came along.

Her family includes her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sandy McAvan of Delmar; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Mrs. Phyllis Kaszinski of DeWitt; daughters-in-law, Dale's wife, Peggy McAvan of DeWitt and Mark's wife, Sharon McAvan of Vinton, Iowa.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was further preceded in death by sons, Dale McAvan, Mark McAvan and an infant son, Robeert McAvan.

Observing Shirley's wishes, no visitation or service will be held.  Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
