Gary Elroy Mielke, 84, of Lady Lake, Florida, formerly of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly, November 30, 2025. A devoted husband, father, and friend, Gary will be remembered for his steadfast work ethic, love of the outdoors, and deep devotion to his family.
He was born October 16, 1941, in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late, Elroy and Ethel Mielke. Gary grew up surrounded by the waters that would become such a central part of his life. After serving honorably in the United Stares Army, he began a lifelong career sailing the Great Lakes, starting as a deckhand and working his way up to captain—a testament to his dedication and perseverance. His time on the water shaped not only his professional life but also his character: steady, reliable, and grounded.
Gary met his beloved wife, Elaine Trapp Ackley Mielke, through mutual friends. After a brief courtship, the two married April 28,1967, and built a warm and full life together. They made their home in Rogers City, Michigan, before purchasing the Hessel Grocery in Hessel, Michigan, and returning to Gary’s childhood town of Hessel/Cedarville. Together, they raised their family with love, laughter, and hard work. Elaine preceded Gary in death, but her memory remained a guiding star in his life.
Outside of work, Gary found joy in hunting, fishing, and boating, passing his appreciation for nature and the water on to his children. He cherished his time on the golf course with his Friday and Saturday leagues and the fellowship those games brought.
Gary is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Don Meadows and Mary and Vance Barber: his sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Otto annd Danielle Mielke and John and Sue Ackley; grandkids, Ashley, Courtney, Shelbi, Johnny, Ashlee, Sydney, Morgan, Billy, Harper, and Jeffery; great-grandkids, William, Ava, and Elliana.
Preceding Gary in death in addition to his parents and wife was his daughter, Debra Ackley.
Per Gary’s wishes, no service will take place.
As Billy Graham once said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Gary exemplified that truth every day of his life.
