Carol Rosalind Ackerman

Miss Carol Rosalind Ackerman, 85, of Pickerington, Ohio, died at 12:41 a.m. Saturday morning, August 1, 2026, at OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital with her sister, niece and nephew at her side.

Carol was given life by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, June 1, 1941, in Celina, Ohio, to the late Reverend Edwin George and Edith Rosalind (Meister) Ackerman. A 1959 graduate of Celina High School and a talented musician, Carol was very active in the music program at CHS and played the flute and piccolo for concert and marching bands. She was an accompanist for many musicians and events and had a beautiful singing voice. Following graduation, Carol attended Capital University for two years where she sang with the 122-member Chapel Choir and went on tour in 1960 as a freshman with 40 members. Carol went on to receive her nursing degree from Grant School of Nursing (RN) and later became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a certification which she received from The Ohio State University in 1972.

She was a passionate healthcare professional, Carol's career as a Registered Nurse began at Grant Hospital where she was a part of the pioneering ICU staff. Her dedication to her patients was further exemplified when she served as Dr. Earl Schulte’s office nurse. After obtaining her CRNA certification, she administered anesthesia at University Hospital (OSU) for five years, spent 16 years at Children’s Hospital, and worked at Taylor Station before concluding her illustrious career at Grant Eye and Ear, retiring in 2011.

Carol was deeply rooted in the Lutheran faith. She was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Celina by her father and carried her faith with her throughout her life. After moving to Pickerington in 1967, she became an active member of Epiphany Lutheran Church. Her remarkable leadership was evident in her 20-year service on the church council, 16 of which she served as council president. Her vision and commitment saw the church through two major building programs. Carol contributed her musical talents by playing the organ for eight years and singing in the choir. She also touched many young lives as a Sunday School teacher, served communion, and coordinated weddings at the church.

Beyond her professional career, Carol was a tireless community volunteer. She significantly contributed to public health during her tenure as President of the Fairfield County Board of Health and was an active member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the Columbus Chapter of CHS 1959. She founded a civic association for children on Denmark Road in Columbus and inspired many as a counselor for the Luther League. Her love for music extended to singing with the Columbus Symphony Chorus for several years.

Her knack for organizing was unparalleled, as she orchestrated numerous class reunions and social gatherings. Known for her beautiful penmanship and expert gift-wrapping skills, Carol was a consummate entertainer who found joy in hosting dinners and events, always bringing people together. She appreciated the art of setting a beautiful table. During her life, she spent many happy times at the family cabin on Lake Huron in Hessel, Michigan in the U.P. (Les Cheneaux Islands). Many raucous games of Michigan Rummy were played at the cabin as well as throughout the year here in Ohio. Carol loved to travel, especially to Germany, Hawaii, Charleston, and many other places in the United States. Carol loved flowers, especially roses and peonies, and was so happy to be able to attend the Tournament of Roses Parade and AmeriFlora ’92.

She embodied generosity and faithfulness, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. She was a beloved sister, aunt, and friend, deeply committed to her faith, medical career, and community. Her memory will be cherished and her legacy celebrated by her extensive network of family and friends.

Carol's family include her loving sister, Phyllis DeLooff of Pickerington; nieces and nephews, Debbie and Bruce Thompson of Hessel, Michigan, and their children, Jason (Morgan) Thompson, Brandy Thompson, Michael (Courtney) Thompson and Katie (Steve) Kirk, Billy Ackerman of Cedarville, Michigan, and his son, Jagger Ackerman, Raymond, Jr. and Sarah Ackerman of DeWitt, Iowa, and their sons, Raymond Ackerman, III and Kyle Ackerman, Margareta “Greta” and Jens Blegvad of Newark, Ohio, and their daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Heath Monroe, Stephanie and Leo Macedo of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and their daughter, Majriela Macedo and Edwin Ackerman, II of Green Bay; many dear friends, especially Rick and Cherie Knapp of Pickerington who were such a help to Carol during these last years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond B. Ackerman and his wife, Sarah, William Ackerman and his wife, Marge; her brother-in-law, Dr. Leonard J. DeLooff and an infant niece and nephew, Mirium Ackerman and Russel Ackerman.

The family will receive friends at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 268 Hill Road North, Pickerington from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Friday August 7, 2026. The Rite Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026, in the church with the Reverend Brad Gee officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Galion, Ohio. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials are suggested to Epiphany Lutheran Church or St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1965 Lutheran Church Road Southeast, Lancaster, Ohio 43130.

Pallbearers will be Billy Ackerman, Edwin Ackerman, II, Raymond Ackerman, III, Kyle Ackerman, Jens Blegvad, Heath Monroe, Leo Macedo and Bruce Thompson.

Carol’s nephew and niece, Raymond B. Ackerman, Jr., Greta Ackerman Blegvad and her dear friend, Keith Ebright, funeral directors are caring for her and the family.
